Abstract
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has recently undertaken two surveys to assess the prevalence of resistance to standard drugs like isoniazid/streptomycin, PAS and thiacetazone. The first of these surveys dealt with the prevalence of drug resistance in patients denying a history of previous antituberculosis chemotherapy, and the second with the prevalence of resistance among all patients attending tim clinic f~)r the first time, irrespective of their previous history of chemotherapy. The same nine urban centres from various parts of the country participated in the two surveys. For the purpose of this report, we are conlining principally to the tirst of these two surveys into which 2,700 patients were admitted. The centres are situated in the places shown in Table I. These centres are expected to t',.e reasonab}y representative of the broad geographical divisions of t h.e country.
