Abstract
The present issue of the journal has research papers on two aspects of BCG vaccination, as it is practised in India.1,2 One deals with the protective efficacy of BCG among children vaccinated under the program. The authors found a low protective efficacy of 31% (statistically insignificant) among all forms of TB combined. The intriguing aspects of the study were a trend towards higher protection against extrapulmonary forms of TB and in the age group 5-9 years. However, the interpretation of these findings is limited by the nature of the study (retrospective case-control), its size and other possible biases that the authors have addressed.
