Abstract
The diagnosis of tuberculosis meningitis (TBM) is usually based on a history of contact, clinical findings, positive tuberculin skin test, chest roentgenogram, characteristic cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) findings, and positive smear or culture for acid fast bacilli.1-2 CSF findings are often ambiguous in children2 and interpretation of tuberculin skin test is difficult because it may be negative due to undernutrition, etc.3 At the same time, positive skin test may occur after BCG vaccination or natural sensitization without implying that the meningitis is definitely due to tuberculosis. Acid fast bacilli are rarely seen in direct smears of CSF and are cultured in only 43 per cent of patients4 and moreover takes 6 weeks for diagnosis.
